Mixtapes!

So the last few months I've been making some mixtapes for friends, under the impossibly stupid guise of DJ Hendy Boy. One of my favourite things in the world is giving new music to people who aren't quite as manically obsessive when it comes to music as me. So seeing as we have a blog I thought I'd make them available to all you internet folk. The tracklists and artwork are below, and you can download all of them through the below mediafire links. Happy listening!

Angus Black

DSC05863.JPG

T-shirt lovers of Brisbane: you can finally rejoice, as Das Monk is now available in the flesh in a brand new store, Angus Black. The nice people over at Four Thousand are much better with their words than I am, so I'll let them give you the low down on this meaty new store...

Those who frequent Brunswick Street would no doubt have noticed a new shop-front pop up. Boys breathe a sigh of relief, this store has one intention only, and that is to please you. Welcome to the block, Angus Black, a butcher shop in it's ‘hey day', and now the latest addition to fall under the Natalie Denning umbrella.

The relatively large, sterile-like space cleverly emulates that of a butcher, as the store is aptly named after. As the story goes Angus Black was born in 1909, the son of the greatest butcher in all of the land. From a young age he was taught the importance of a quality cut and like the butcher himself, Angus Black stocks the ‘finest cuts from across the Australian landscape' all at an affordable price.

Expect to find cult Melbourne street-wear label Alpha 60 alongside the likes of April 77, Gram, Fortunes Fool, Das Monk, Black Noise White Rain, Vanishing Elephant and Henson.

Rare and well done, Angus Black has a beefy yet selective choice of stock set to impress the most discerning of male shoppers.

Where's the beef? Why it's at Shop 2, 354 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley.

Haha yeah how good are meat puns.

King Tuff - Sun Medallion

This is such a great album. It's little bit garage, a little bit 70s. I've had it for most of this year but it's increasingly becoming my go-to album when I can't be bothered actually using my brain to think about what I want to listen to. Which is a good thing! This song Sun Medallion makes me want to grow a moustache and lay out by the pool with a big bag of Wizz Fizz.

Evan Meister

Evan Meister (whose work you may know from our Ogre tee and Desert Eye tee) has just put out a few new artworks on his flickr page, and they're absolutely mind-melting. His latest drawings are set in some kind of weird ass world where science fiction meets Ancient Egypt in comic book style panels. I can't tell you how much I love this dudes work...

Jacuzzi Boys - Planet of the Dreamers

I love these guys. They've released quite a few 7 inches over the last year or so and now we finally get to hear their debut LP 'No Seasons' in all of it's garagey surf goodness. Oh and this song is an absolute gem.

Gordon Magnin

I keep a very large folder of inspiration images on my computer from years of trawling through the big bad internet, many of which are collages, because that's my thing I guess. But it was only recently that I linked the fact that many of my favourite collages are actually by the one artist, that being LA-based Gordon Magnin. A lot of Magnin's work features the slicing and dicing of beautiful women and cultural icons, all being defaced somehow with a great sense of humour and fun. Below are some of my favourites, but check out his full body of work at his website.

Memory Tapes - Plain Material

I went from thinking this album was a pretty standard set of tunes from indie music's latest buzz genre ('chill wave' anyone?) to easily one of the best releases this year. The more I listen to it the more I get chills up my spine. When was the last time the second last song on an album was this good?

The Grand Social pop-up store

IMG0576.JPG

If you look up at the top of your browser at this address, you'll see that the first part of the URL is "thegrandsocial.com.au". If you have no idea what that is, The Grand Social is an online marketplace for Australian and New Zealand designers. Over the past couple of years, they've managed to nab all of the top local labels and in the process have changed the accessibility and quality of online shopping for fashion in Australia. Obviously we're one of the labels that works with The Grand Social, and are pretty excited that they're now venturing out of the interwebs and into reality, firstly with a pop-up store in the MLC centre in Sydney (which opened last Thursday), and early next year with a permanent store in Darlinghurst, Sydney.

So if you're in the CBD, make sure you check out the pop-up store over the next few weeks. In store you can get your hands on everything from some of our favourite labels E L L E R Y, Chronicles of Never, Graz, Asuza, Limedrop, and many more. Oh and of course Das Monk.

Family Portrait - Mega Secrets

HOOPS!

It's been a while, but there's another Hoops party on this Saturday at Goodgod Small Club at La Campana, and it's going to be just as good as every other one the girls have put on. The Hoops girls and Beni are the big draw cards but if you look closely at the very smallest font you will see DJ Hendy Boy, who is making his stellar DJing debut. Okay, so DJ Hendy Boy is me, and I will just be drinking a beer next to the decks while I make Anna mix the music for me, but let's pretend this is a big deal okay. I'm going to be all over the place with my music selections, playing everything from chill wave to garage to reggae and a little bit of soul... but the general feel will be summery jams. It starts at 9 and I'm going to get all diva on you and refuse to play to an empty room, so make sure you get there nice and early!

The Family portrait song above is just an example of what you'll hear if you get there for DJ Hendy Boy...
